The Bible is the Book of Life, a treasure chest of truth. It revives the soul, makes wise the simple, gives joy to the heart, gives light to the eyes, is more precious than gold and is sweeter than honey. In obeying its teachings there is great reward (see Ps. 19:7-11). The abundant wisdom and riches God has provided in His Word are available to every Christian, but they are possessed only by those who diligently seek them. Meditation and prayer are two keys which unlock this storehouse of God’s wisdom as you study. The Design for Discipleship studies have been carefully planned to help you (1) establish a program of personal study of the Scriptures, (2) examine the great truths of the Bible and (3) learn and practice the essentials of discipleship. A time. Just as church attendance is planned for a regular time each week, you should plan a specific time for your Bible study. Some like to study a little every day; others set aside an evening a week. Decide on a time that is best for you, and stick to it faithfully. A place. Choose a place free from distractions for your Bible study. If possible, study in the same place each time. Resources. Besides this study book, you will need a Bible (Old and New Testaments). A dictionary will also be helpful. Method. E ach question will direct you to a passage of Scripture. After thinking about the passage, write the answer in your own words. Scripture references will give the book, chapter and verse. For example, Revelation 3:20 refers to the Book of the Revelation, Chapter three, verse 20. It is also helpful to read the context (the surrounding verses) of each passage listed. Each unit includes a Scripture verse or passage to memorize. Start to learn the memory assignment the day you begin a new unit. Be sure to learn the reference as well. You may find it helpful to write each memory verse on a small card. Carry the card with you, or put it in a place where you will easily see it. Look at it often, and you will soon have the memory portion memorized. When you have studied the unit thoroughly, see the examination booklet for instructions on taking the exams. Be sure you have sufficiently prepared yourself before attempting to answer the questions. Be sure to pray before you begin your study. Ask the Lord for understanding as you study each unit.
