This is a vintage "homongi" style kimono for women. "Homongi" means "visiting wear" and this kind of kimono was very popular among upper class women in the Meiji era as a formal dress for social occasions.
The homongi-style is the most ostentatious kimono for married women and the second most for unmarried women. A homongi kimono may also be worn to tea ceremonies and weddings.
The homongi is typically worn with a fukuro obi (drum sash).
