Marital Problems Are Common, But You Can Save Your Marriage In today's complex and on the go society, marital problems are nearly as likely as having brown eyes. In fact, every marriage goes through its ups and downs. Many times marital problems are a combination of three different types of problems, including individual problems (such as low self esteem), outside influences (such as a car accident), and then the most traditional of couple problems (such as a mother in law that does not like you). No matter how complex and unique you feel your marital problems are, do not despair. There are ways that you can save your marriage. The most important thing that you and your spouse can do in order to save your marriage is to participate in therapy. It is vital that you participate in both individual therapy and couple's therapy. The individual therapy will help each of you process and get over the individual issues that are underlying to your marital problems. The couple's therapy will then help you both learn how to communicate with each other and how to share your individual feelings and opinions with each other. Though therapy will be uncomfortable for you and your spouse in the beginning, soon you will enjoy having the neutral party there to help you properly communicate to each other. You must remember to go into therapy with an open mind. Marital Problems Are Often Not What You Think Some of what your therapist may ask you or your spouse to do may seem strange to you. However, skepticism will only harm any chance you have in saving your marriage. So be prepared for anything, expect the unexpected, and be willing to follow any advice your therapist gives you. This may be the only thing that saves your tenuous marriage. The most important step you can take to save your marriage is to have hope. Have a positive attitude and know that your marriage will be okay. Once you have this positive outlook, every other problem you and your spouse will have to surmount will seem a lot smaller than it did before. If you go into therapy with the negative outlook that it will not work and that it will be useless, then you will not be able to accomplish anything in therapy. It will simply be a waste of time and money for yourself, your spouse, and even your therapist. It is your outlook that will affect the success rate of your attempts to save your marriage. Whether you are positive or negative, you will end up with a self fulling prophecy. Thus, be positive! Believe in you and your spouse! Know that you will get to the end of the dark tunnel and be out in the light again. What Causes Rifts in Relationships? Even those who are very much in love suffer from marital problems and there are many different causes of theses problems. One of the most insidious types of problems is individual problems. This is because these individual problems, such as low self esteem because of losing one's job for example, will masquerade as other problems. In fact, usually these individual problems become buried by numerous other resulting problems that even the individual who is suffering from the individual problems is unaware of it. This is why individual therapy is a useful technique for all married couples to make use of. Your marriage is also affected by traditional marital problems as well, including child rearing, the handling of money, household responsibilities, etc. However, though these marital problems are usually the reason that a couple will start going to marriage counseling, they are usually not the end all be all of a couple's total problems in their relationship. This is because these couple problems are often a result of individual problems and the way that the individual suffering from these problems handles the problem. Often times the individual will begin taking out the problem on his or her spouse and before they know it, they are in the midst of major marital problems. Finally, your marriage is affected by outside influences, including family, friends, and even others. If you are very close to your mother but she does not like your spouse, this will greatly strain your relationship with your spouse and your mother and will definitely strain any type of relationship your spouse may have had with your mother. If money is tight for you and your spouse because you recently were laid off from your job, this problem is a result of outside influences. The reason outside influences affect the relationship between spouses is that a marriage, though technically simply between two people, is its own entity that interacts with everything around it. Thus, no matter how you and your spouse choose to shut out the real world, you will eventually be affected by what is going on in it. Nevertheless, no matter the cause of the marital problems, the first part of any solution that has a good chance of saving your marriage is going to therapy. Especially if you take part in both individual and couple's therapy, all of the influences and other causes of marital problems will soon disappear. Therapy is the primary solution too all marital problems because, not only does it help both you and your spouse process your current marital problems, but it also teaches you how to foster an environment of honest and open communication between the two of you, which is the most important key to a successful relationship.
