Its debut album is laced with liberal doses of all three genres, but there's none of the dilettantism that this would usually imply; Trik Turner are no mere Limp Bizkit copyists. Their expertise in each musical form is on display on every song, from the pop metal onslaught of the opener, "Existence," through the angst-ridden, raw lyrical pain of "Father" to the contrasting awe-inspired hip-hop celebration that is "New York Groove."But it's on the more down-home "Friends and Family" that Trik Turner finds its own voice; it's an impressive ensemble performance that swings and has a momentum and sound all its own, as singer Doug "Rid" Moore expresses his philosophy over a simple, infectious groove that's more than a little radio-friendly. Expressing their unique sound and vision, TRIK TURNER is a strong debut that comes close to achieving its aim of uniting hip-hop and metal in an unstoppable combination.

Editorial Reviews
Trik Turner isn't rap-rock or nu metal, though they incorporate elements of both genres into their major-label debut. At times, the Phoenix sextet is more akin to alt-rockers Everlast, especially on "Sacrifice" and "Friends & Family." On the latter, TT flesh out soulful, acoustic-influenced hip-hop with a lovely string arrangement. From the hip, midtempo rhythmic rock of "Existence," Trik Turner create a familiar sound that's nevertheless slightly distinct from their Creed- and Korn-spawned brethren. Like Papa Roach, family life is explored in the aggro but dynamic "Father," while rap-ghetto stylings render Ace Frehley's "New York Groove" nearly unrecognizable. The latter part of the album is more rap leaning, with "Black Sheep" and "Triks of the Trade" standing out. If Trik Turner covers a lot of the ground between the rap and rock worlds, they do so with style, substance, and a signature sound. --Katherine Turman

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT cd, blew away my expectations December 30, 2002

Trik Turner is the first band that convinced me to buy their cd because of their live show. I had only heard Friends And Family on the radio, and I didn't like it (I'm more of a fan of heavier stuff). So I pushed them back into my brain as another crappy wanna be rap band.
THEN I saw them at HFStival in Washington DC, and they blew me away. They have lots of high energy songs, great heavy stuff, and since I got the cd, i've even started liking Friends and Family. Give these guys a shot, and if they're ever touring around your area, check them out!
