Barnyard (2006) (DVD, 2010, Canadian) Detailed item info What really happens on the farm when the farmer isn't looking? In director Steve Oedekerk's (KUNG POW: ENTER THE FIST, ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS) computer-generated animation feature, the farm animals can do everything humans do. They talk, walk upright, buy human contraband from a "gray market" run by the gophers, and even turn the barn into a nightclub. Of course, they do all of this in secret. The biggest party animal is Otis (voiced by Kevin James), a happy-go-lucky cow. (Yes, the movie is full of male cows, complete with udders....) The animals know they can always count on him for a kooky stunt or a practical joke. But Otis' carefree attitude doesn't sit well with his father, Ben (Sam Neill), the barnyard patriarch and protector. Ben loves his slacker son, but thinks Otis needs to learn more responsibility, especially because he hopes to leave a legacy to care for the barnyard. When the dangerous coyote season arrives and Ben is suddenly no longer able to serve as barnyard security, mayhem immediately ensues and the barnyard looks more like an amusement park then a farm...until Otis steps up to fill his father's shoes. But is he really ready to take the lead, or would he prefer to be wooing Daisy (Courtney Cox), the pretty new cow on the farm, and partying with his friends? And when push comes to shove, will Otis be able to stand up to the coyotes and protect the barnyard? This coming-of-age tale is bolstered by the human antics of the animals and genuine laugh-out-loud moments for all ages. Wanda Sykes voices Bessy, Daisy's cynical cow friend, and Danny Glover voices Miles the Mule, a sage elder on the farm. Songs by Tom Petty and Peter Gabriel, as well as other artists, elevate the soundtrack above the typical children's film. A young cow named Otis (voiced by Kevin James, The King of Queens) loves to have fun at the farm's wild late-night hoe-downs, despite the disapproval of his father, Ben (Sam Elliott, Thank You for Smoking). When Ben dies defending the barnyard from marauding coyotes, Otis is chosen as the new leader--but responsibility sits uneasily on Otis' head and he fears he may not be able to protect his friends from the coyotes. Barnyard's design of the cows seems inspired by Gary Larson's The Far Side comics; though the style is simple, the characters are surprisingly expressive. From moment to moment, the movie is reasonably entertaining. The actors--including Courteney Cox, Danny Glover, and David Koechner (Anchorman) as a very menacing coyote--do solid voice work and there are plenty of amusing gags. But as Barnyard gallops towards its end, the combination of cliches (the story is a clumsy reworking of The Lion King), odd choices (the male cows have udders), and lackluster dialogue makes the movie sag. --Bret Fetzer Product Description Move over, all you pretenders...here are the original party animals – the animated gang of Barnyard! This laugh-filled adventure stars Otis, a carefree cow who spends his days singing, dancing and playing tricks on humans...much to the dismay of his father, Ben. Wild, wacky and "udderly" hilarious, here’s a herd of animated pranksters that’ll keep you laughing out loud! Over The Hedge- Cute, entertaining movie. This- Even when you get past the bulls with udders, I thought that there were a lot of elements of this film that weren't appropriate for children under 10. There were some cool jokes and sparse pieces of snappy writing- Sam Elliot singing Tom Petty was fun, but the animation of the few people in the movie and the coyotes was a little dark and ugly for my kid. I felt like I watched two movies- one was the Nick TV show, the other a kind of stark coming of age flick. The animation style seemed to change depending on which part of the script you were in- it just seemed choppy. Both concepts on their own were decently done (except for the bulls with udders), but there was enough questionable content that I won't be owning this one or even watching it again.
