In 1992 Japanese comic creator Nobuyuki Fukumoto's mahjong anime comic series "Akagi" was first published. It appeared in the weekly magazine "Modern Mahjong".
The manga has since been turned into two action movies, and a 26 episode anime series made in Japan in the fall of 2005.
The unique feature of Washtisu mahjong is that three quarters of the tiles are transparent, so you can get a lot of information about your opponents' hands.
Because so many tiles are transparent, they are placed in a bag rather than in a wall and each player wears a glove when they draw tiles so that they cannot feel which tiles they are picking up. (Some experienced players can "read" tile faces by passing their thumb tip over them.")
This is a genuine, full sized, unused Japanese Washitsu mahjong set.
