This is a vintage Japanese mahjong set complete with hand-made bamboo tile backs.
Look carefully at the photos of the tiles and you'll see that the bamboo tile back has a notch in it which is fitted by hand onto the tile. This kind of set is no longer produced due to the amount of work required to fit 144 tiles with bamboo backs, so this set is a real collector's item.
The tiles also have a diagonal groove along the facing edges, which is an unusual and attractive design feature. The designs of the tile faces have a definite "retro" look to them.
