"I also tested if will play when base is in another room, as well as I took the receiver on the patio, it works both ways.( You do need the D batteries, four of them, for the receiver, which are not included)...music with my family or frends on the summer day outside the house...Great for the price. "I LOVE this speaker. I use it everyday with my Sirius radio in my workshop or while I'm cooking dinner.We have a 3 story house and the signal works in every room. We recently took this unit on vacation with us and it worked wonderfully with my ipod indoors and even 30 yards outside by the fire pit. We are buying another one of these for my Father-in-Law this Christmas as he was very impressed when he saw it. Don't know how long the batteries last because I haven't had to replace them yet. I use it to pipe my i-tunes play list from my computer to my patio outside...Last Halloween I put batteries in it, piped scary music to it and put it in the bushes to scare trick or treaters.
