By Dr Ian Brighthope
Daytime fatigue is not normal. Lack of energy and its effects on the mind – including poor concentration and memory, anxiety, irritability and depression – should and can be treated.
More and more people are suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – often referred to as Post Viral Syndrome or unkindly as ‘Yuppie Flu’. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is aggravated by stress, poor nutrition and sensitivity to the increasing presence of pollutants in our daily environment.
Professor Ian Brighthope, Immediate Past President of the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, outlines the most common causes of abnormal fatigue and discusses various viruses and bacteria – including glandular fever and candida – which are often precursors to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. He explains the effects on our bodies of chemical and electromagnetic pollution and looks at the increasing incidence of allergies and food sensitivities.
Highlighted with case studies, FIGHTING FATIGUE also covers the role of
• Heavy metal contamination
• Vitamin and nutritional deficiencies
• Body pollution
• Psychological factors
• Sunlight and exercise
Professor Ian Brighthope offers an anti-fatigue management programme which shows how to counteract this insidious condition which makes many sufferers feel they have lost control of their lives and fear they will never be well again.
Professor Ian Brighthope graduated in Agricultural Science in 1965 and was subsequently involved in the design and implementation of field trials in animal nutrition and teaching.
In 1969 he entered medical school at the University of New South Wales, and following three pre-clinical years, completed his clinical studies at Monash University in Victoria. After completing his residency and a year of general medicine, he travelled widely throughout Europe and North America trying to fill in the gaps in his medical training. This educational travel included a six month appointment as a ship surgeon and travel to many parts of the world learning about traditional forms of medicine and healing.
His interest in the implications of human nutrition in health and disease developed at this time as a natural consequence of his prior involvement in the Agricultural and Veterinary fields. It was in the area of animal nutrition that Professor Brighthope became aware of the importance of optimum nutrition and the use of nutritional supplementation in animal production and the treatment of animal diseases. Neglect of these areas of human care prompted him to adopt the nutritional approach in his medical practice. Also, the addition of agricultural and food processing chemicals to the food chain concerned him and resulted in his investigating their effects on the human nervous and immune systems.
Professor Brighthope now specialises in Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, with particular interest in the nutritional and environmental influences in heart disease, psychiatric disorders, the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, arthritis, asthma, food and chemical sensitivities, auto-immune diseases, diabetes and cancer. The antioxidant clinic that was under his management was the only one of its kind in Australia. Professor Brighthope is at present performing ongoing original research in nutraceuticals and University-based research. Australia’s first Detox & Chelation Centre was established by Professor Brighthope.
Professor Brighthope is the immediate past President of The Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, an organisation of doctors concerned with the dissemination of unbiased information on nutrition to the medical profession. He was one of the founding Directors of the Orthomolecular Medical Association of Australia in 1978 and has been the Secretary of that organisation since its inception. He is the editor of the Journal of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine and has published many articles on the use of nutrition in such diverse conditions as diabetes, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, auto-immune diseases, insomnia and the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
He is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Complementary Therapies in Medicine. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine published in the United Kingdom.
Professor Brighthope is the author of 5 books - Sleep Without Drugs, The AIDS Fighters, A Recipe for Health, Knock Out AIDS and Fighting Fatigue. Professor Brighthope is also listed in the International Authors and Writers ‘Who’s Who’.
He is a Fellow of the International College of Applied Nutrition, a Fellow of the New York Academy of Orthomolecular Psychiatry and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Australian Society for Environmental Medicine. He pioneered the first post-graduate medical course in Nutrition in Australia and is one of the principal lecturers. He was also instrumental in initiating the ACNEM fellowship program and fellowship examinations. A quality assurance and continuing medical education program is an integral part of the qualifying fellowship program.
In addition, Professor Brighthope also consults for the manufacturing industry in nutrition and micronutrient supplementation, and is performing ongoing research programs in his practice. The approach to the treatment of food and chemical sensitivities in his busy centre is unique. He has a very busy lecturing schedule to healthcare professionals internationally. Professor Brighthope supervises and consults for various health resorts and specialist clinics, preventative medicine programs and sporting concerns. He also helped establish the Health Network Australia, a group formed to achieve participatory democracy in the field of health for all Australians.
In 2001, he was awarded The Lady Cilento Award by the Complementary Healthcare Council of Australia in recognition of exceptional contribution over many years in the advancement and professionalism of the Health and Nutrition Industry in Australia.
