Borapet is a climber generally found in tropical forests of Asia. It can be planted by stem cutting or seeds. In Thailand the herb is recognized as a health tonic and digestive. People have different ways of taking this very bitter herb. It can be soaked in honey and taken as a longevity tonic. Some cut mature vines into approximately five centimeter long pieces. The bark is peeled away, and the soft woody core is submerged in water used for rinsing rice. Afterwards, the herb is steamed to take away the bitterness before being put in salt water. It is then boiled and washed in cold water and finally is preserved in syrup to be taken for thirst, heartburn, and as diuretic and tonic. Buddhist monks in the Northeast prefer to chew the stem raw when on pilgrimage to prevent illness and relieve fever. Borapet has been considered an effective herb to build body immune against various forms of pathogens. There are on-going scientific research to investigate its effects. Some diabetic patients who took borapet together with conventional drugs fould their blood glucose levels effectively controlled. There are still no human in vivo studies conducted on this potential whereas studies conducted on mice showed increased insulin production. Another traditional use is to obtain the juice from borapet stems and leaves and mix it with water from rinsing rice. This is used to treat hair and scalp, premature graying and dandruff. Studies have confirm borapet’s anti-oxidizing property which can slow cell aging. In a study those with hair loss took 400 – 800 milligrams (1-2 capsules) of borapet powder for one month reported improved hair growth. Some individuals with premature graying have found that ingesting borapet reduced their predicament.
