U.S. #1252 honors American Music and was issued at the headquarters of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, which was founded 50 years earlier. The design, based on an 18th-century vignette, pictures wind and string instruments from the era of America’s founding.
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
Composer Victor Herbert founded ASCAP in New York City on February 13, 1914, with the goal of protecting copyrighted music compositions. The majority of the early members were writers and publishers from the Tin Pan Alley (a section of Manhattan named so because of the large concentration of musicians and publishers who lived there). These included Irving Berlin, Otto Harbach, and John Philip Sousa.
By 2009, ASCAP’s membership reached more than 360,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers.
