A collection of 4 books:
Assegai by Wilbur Smith
La's Orchestra Saves The World by Alexander McCall Smith
Envy The Night by Michael Koryta
The Various Flavours of Coffee by Anthony Capella
My favourite is The Various Flavours of Coffee:
The wonderful, subtle aromas of coffee waft from the pages of this entrancing novel. It's 1895, and Robert Wallis, poet and dandy, thinks his money worries are over when he's employed by a merchant, Samuel Pinker, to describe the distinctive flavoursof coffee, alongside Pinker's spirited daughter, Emily. But the young man has much to learn, as he realises when he is sent to a lush area of East Africa where coffee grows wild. A keen devotee of sensual pleasure, Robert meets more than he bargained on during the journey to the new plantation - he finds Fikre, who's name means 'love'. Only when he returns to London does he learn that true love between a man and a woman is as rich, mysterious and perplexing as the magical flavours of coffee.
Second favourite is La's Orchestra Saves the World:
Once again Alexander McCall Smith, author of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, delves into the heart of human life with this touching story of wartime courage, hope and tender love postponed. He describes how a country community in Suffolk adapts to changes brought by the Second World War, helped by 'La', a newcomer, who forms an amateur orchestra. As she provides solace to neighbours and strangers, she also takes tentative steps down an unfamiliar path, towards her own happines.
