To use a 64-bit version of Windows 7, you must have a computer that has a 64-bit processor. Also, you must have 64-bit device drivers for the devices that are in the computer
You may want to determine whether the platform of Windows Vista is installed. To verify that you have the platform of Windows Vista, follow these steps:
Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
The operating system appears as follows:
For a 64-bit version operating system, "64-bit Operating System" appears for the system type under System.

Pros: Upgrade version is significantly cheaper than full retail version. Some users of Vista may not notice all the changes, but it really is a better OS in nearly every way. Upgrade can be used to do an in-place upgrade of systems currently running Vista. Upgrade works for Win XP users, too, but there's a big "gotcha."
Cons: Some users of Vista may not notice all the changes. There isn't much to differentiate it from Vista for many casual users. Not as versatile as the full retail version.
Other Thoughts: Upgrade can be used by Win XP users, but it requires a clean install, asks to insert old XP disc during install to verify you have a legit copy of XP before proceeding with installation. You should really do a backup before upgrading anyway, but this forces your hand and adds a few extra steps (and a lot of time) to the process. If you want to do an install on a machine that doesn't have XP or Vista already installed, apparently you have to install one of the older OS's first and then install Win 7 Upgrade.
To upgrade Win XP you'll have to do a backup of your system before wiping your old XP installation if you want to save your stuff. Importing an XP backup into Vista or Win 7 requires you to download a special backup restoration app from MS that can read backups created by Win XP.
