U.S. #1237 was issued in honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The Academy was founded by an Act of Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Its purpose is to “investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art” needed by any department of the government. The first president of the NAS was Alexander Dallas Bache, great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin.
Since its founding, the NAS has grown to nearly 2,500 members, with membership considered a great honor. It meets once a year in Washington, D.C., and publishes a scholarly journal.
