I Must Have For Starting Collectors of The Famous Blue Delft Polychrome!
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines offered tiles for the first time in the seventies.
There are several series: Dutch windmills, ships, animals, crafts and a few more with a total of at least 20 tiles. The tiles were offered in a small plastic box accompanied by chocolates of A. Driessen from Breda in Holland. These tiles are 7 x 7 cm in size (see pictures).
Business Class passengers received Delft Blue coasters and later Polychrome coasters from 1981 until 1993. The most common series are showing reproductions of old Dutch gables and houses, and authentic Dutch windmills, crafts, children’s games and ships.
There is also a tile series showing reproductions of nine Van Gogh paintings.
Last but not least. Delft Blue tiles or coasters were also made to celebrate first flights to new destinations. Passengers or special guests would receive such a gift on these first flights.
Delft Polychrome derives its high quality from the efforts of experts, who have passed on their know-how from farther to son since 1749. At that time, tiles were very much in vogue. They decorated the walls of Dutch interiors, with the costly Polychrome taking pride of place.
Delft Polychrome Ceramics are painted with several colours. Yellow, green, blue and red-brown in particular are used. The use of colours originated in the Mediterranean countries, where they had been using such compositions for longer.
