COLLEGE - THE FRESHMAN'S ESSENTIAL HANDBOOK FOR COLLEGE -A NOVEL WRITTEN BY DONALD J THORN - SFI
THIS EBOOK WAS A LABOR OF LOVE! I graduated from High School in 1962 from Japan. Itazuke Air Force Base in fact. I went to San Diego State University for 5 years and enrolled in Air Force ROTC. I wanted to be an Air Force
Pilot. My Dad was Air Force. One of the very first E-9's which was a new rank in the military. My Mom was Department of Army Civilian. So I was called "An Air Force Brat!"
Just before graduation, I was given a pre-Air Force physical. I FLUNKED! I had Pes Planus - or FLAT FEET!
I was so disgusted I dropped out of college. 30 days later my 1D classification (Reservist) was changed to 1A!
One week later, I was given "Greetings From Lyndon B. Johnson" the President of the United States. I was eligible
for THE DRAFT!
I figured the Army wouldn't want me because the Air Force didn't. HOW STUPID WAS I? When I took my battery
of exams, I scored so high that's all they could see. They completely ignored the Pes Planus at the bottom of the
page! Hey, it really wasn't a contest. I was 22 and had already attended 5 years of college and the other 749 "kids"
(And I say that in the most respectful manner I can) were only 18. They shaved by slapping Milk on their face and then had the Cat lick it off!
After my stint in the United States Army, I was ready to go back to College and finish what I had started before.
You had to complete your college stay within 10 years of Discharge - so I waited 9 years! It wasn't fear that kept me
away, it was the University of Texas at Austin's 40,000 students! My graduating class in Japan was 27! There were
500 kids IN SCHOOL THERE! All grades!
That wasn't a College - IT WAS A COMPLETELY SUSTAINED CITY! Of course, they had one hell of a sports program
and it only cost me $375 a semester! The G.I. Bill paid me $527 a month so that was more - DUH. I lived on that and a part time job at the student bookstore. Let's face it, I had to completely approach College differently than the other kids (There's that word again). But they were 18 - 19 and I was 38. I couldn't Date! The only thing I could do was ADOPT!
I brashly threw myself in the only seat available in the College of Communication Advisers Room. I was so very lucky I sat by the only Adviser who was also 38! (Yeah, the others were "kids") I said, this is what I have to transfer in from San Diego State University and I have to graduate from UT in one year! SHE DIDN"T LAUGH!
In fact she figured out the only way I could do it!
Understand, a normal College "LOAD" was 12 credits - and that was hard! That meant you stayed in class 12 hours
a week! She told me I had to take 18 credits in the Fall, 21 in the Spring, and 2 classes each of two Summer Sessions! I didn't know better - so I said OK! You see, I'm a doer, not a complainer, and I never told anyone what
I was doing so I never got the usual, "You can't take that many credits!"
You see, I'm not a negative person. The glass is never "half full" or "half empty" I just always had someone else s
glass! And they just weren't as thirsty as I was always thirsty. This eBook is the culmination of the steps I took
in order to take that many classes and succeed! The first 18 credits I made a "C" - UGH - and then three "A's" and two "B's". And then 21 credits brought 4 "A's" and three "B's". The Summer series brought 4 "A's". So now I was
ready to graduate!
I showed my Adviser what I had done and she said, "I never thought you would do so well!" I was thinking, "Then why did you make me do that much?" But I didn't say it out loud! She then said those fateful words: IF YOU TAKE
THREE MORE CLASSES OR 9 CREDITS YOU CAN GRADUATE "WITH HONORS!" Whoopty Snot - big deal. But she explained how it WAS a big deal! I had 51 credits at UT and if you take 60 credits - or half of the 120 it took to graduate I would be placed on the Dean's List and Graduate WITH HONORS on my degree!
I thought about it and I told her after 18, 21 and 2 Summer I and 2 Summer II (That's four hours of classes every day!) three classes a WEEK would BORE ME! And what job could I get in between 9 hours a week? Well I had one more Semester in that one year of eligibility so I asked, "How many classes do I have to take to receive ANOTHER DEGREE! (Remember the cups? I'd rather be devoured by LIONS than tickled to death by ANTS! I'm never half-hog, I'm WHOLE HOG!
She said it took 30 credits in a Major to be eligible for Graduation in any field. If I stayed in the College of Communication (Speech Communication - which I had already completed - Journalism - Advertising and Radio-TV-Film) she could use 6 credits they hadn't counted from San Diego State and I would only have to take
24 credits or 8 classes! (That's TWICE A NORMAL SEMESTER LOAD!) I said OK and we planned exactly what classes I had to take in order to add a Degree in Radio-TV-Film.
I took 8 classes, but I wasn't in class 24 hours a week - I had three two hour labs! That's THIRTY hours a week! And they say you must spend two hours out of class for every one in class. That's a 90 hour week! It's a good thing I neither dated nor adopted! I lived in the library! My actual "sleeping" place was right behind a 24 hour Coffee Shop. I paid for one cup and they filled it all night. But I tipped them very nicely so they never minded.
I made 6 "A's" and two "B's" and graduated in TWO degrees WITH HONORS and finished one degree in one semester. Again, big whoopty snot, right? But I have been so very proud of that year for the rest of my life since! Again, this ebook is exactly how I or anyone else can do it or even do it again. If I wanted, I could finish the college of Communication in two more Semesters!
